From the circular coast route from El Médano there is a track which climbs directly up to the summit. The first part of the walk crosses an area of unique sand formations known as “sismitas”, which are a fossil footprint of seismic activity which occurred several thousand years ago.
As we ascend we will constantly have the mountain, with its characteristic reddish hues in view. This colour is the result of the pyroclastic basalt that it is made of, and it contrasts with the vibrant vegetation, which changes as we climb upwards until we arrive at the summit, dominated by sweet tabaiba which has a flattened prostate form due to the strong winds.
From the summit of the volcano, at 171 m, we can appreciate the spectacular views over the southern part of the island, from Punta de Rasca, past the peak of Mount Teide to Montaña Pelada on the other side of El Médano.
We can also see the unique beach of La Tejita with its fine sand at the foot of the west side of the mountain, along with the southern side of Montaña Roja with its vertiginous 40 m cliffs which were formed by the erosive action of the sea and where Cory’s shearwaters nest.
After our descent we can take a swim at one of the spectacular beaches that surround this natural area.
