The first part of the walk is along a pleasant promenade next to the beach. A number of information boards provide us with detailed facts about the area, such as the legend of Peña María, and the fact that the ships used by Magellan and Elcano on the first circumnavigation of the world were anchored here in 1519.
The next beach, Leocadio Machado, is the perfect place to do windsurfing and kitesurf, and in fact world renowned championships are held here. Later on there is an interesting natural pond where we can see a variety of waders.
Continuing along the coast we cross an area of unique geological formations known as “sismitas”, numerous tubes and sand dikes which are the result of a great earthquake several thousand years ago. These seismic movements caused the sand to be compressed with sea water which was then ejected in huge jets.
From this point we can either walk up Montaña Roja, or continue straight on on a footpath alongside the rocky coastline up to the peak of Bocinegro, a 36-metre high volcanic cone. On the descent we will cross an area of sweet tabaiba until we reach the Llano de La Mareta, then return back to the beach.
Pay attention as you are walking and you will spot various bunkers that were used during World War II for surveillance and defence. On returning to the promenade we can enjoy a well-deserved rest in one of the many restaurants and cafes.
