The Chasna Trail (Camino de Chasna), in the past, allowed the exchange of agricultural products between the regions on either side of Tenerife (potatoes, fruit and sweet chestnuts from the north and cereals, cheeses and figs from the south). This route across the Granadillian highlands also enabled the transport of pinewood and hardwoods, and also facilitated the seasonal change of grazing areas.
Nowadays it has been designated as a Natural Trail and is classified as a Gran Recorrido, or long route, (GR-131) which starts in La Esperanza, passes through the valley of La Orotava and the National Park and then up the Degollada de Guajara before descending to Vilaflor and Arona.
The section of the walk which passes through the municipality de Granadilla links the hilltop of Degollada with the valley of Ucanca, via the foothills circling Mount Guajara, which is covered in the unique vegetation typical of the highlands of Tenerife, principally abundant gorse and Pterocephalus lasiospermus (rosalillo de cumbre). As you descend the mountain you will see that the Canary Island pine starts to become increasingly common, until later on you will be surrounded by it.
You will see that the GR-131 takes you to the town of Vilaflor, some of the route being shared with the PR-TF 72 mentioned previously. Remember that you can also visit the “Paisaje Lunar” (Moon Landscape) of Los Escurriales by taking the PR-TF 83.
